The effects of Climate Change, and how it links in with Reusing Waste

When garbage in landfills decomposes, some types of waste(most notably food waste) will emit harmful greenhouse gases. These harmful greenhouse gases will heat up the atmosphere, causing many complications such as natural disasters and rising sea levels. This only damages the planet even more, which is why stopping climate change is a number one priority. In the United States alone, waste and lost foodstuffs accounted for more than 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which is also a key greenhouse gas. This is one of the many reasons why reusing waste is so important!

Carbon dioxide gets the most attention out of the three leading greenhouse gases(Carbon dioxide(CO2), Methane(CH4), and water vapour(H2O)), because it is the most common. However, methane is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere, which is why methane must not be released into the atmosphere.

Methane is released into the atmosphere by a process known as anaerobic fermentation. Anaerobic fermentation is the process of microbes digesting waste without oxygen, which releases methane into the air. Composting actually does not release any methane into the air, as in the presence of oxygen and water, microbes use the carbon for energy and decompose the organic waste.

Hopefully, this helped you have a deeper understanding of this topic!
